Bartholomeus Klip

Victorian Homestead

Bartholomeus Klip (BK) is a wonderfully restored Victorian homestead on an operational wheat and sheep farm amid the 10,000 acres Elandsberg Nature Reserve in the Cape Winelands, just outside Riebeek and a mere 15 minutes’ drive from Wellington.

In just under 20 years of operation, the guesthouse has built a solid reputation for its impeccable farm-style hospitality, idyllic location in a peaceful country atmosphere and deliciously fresh food. Ten thousand acres of nature reserve with over 500 head of game, a working farm, wheatlands, flocks of sheep and a buffalo and tortoise breeding project invite no more than ten guests at a time to enjoy walking, hiking, mountain biking, canoeing and birdwatching, or just to switch off and relax. Bartholomeus klip is located in the scenic Riebeek Valley near Cape Town, and is an excellent base for exploring the Cape Winelands.

Activities at and around Bartholomeus Klip:

There are many different things to do at Bartholomeus Klip, although plenty of our guests love to spend their time with us just switching off. However, if you want to do something more strenuous, we provide mountain bikes for cycling through the reserve or along the farm roads through the wheatfields, and there are plenty of wonderful routes to choose for walks. We also now offer archery, which is proving very popular.

Down at the dam guests can take to the water in canoes and kayaks, or go windsurfing, freshwater fishing or bird watching.

Even the most relaxed guest will want to join our rangers on the morning and evening nature drives through the reserve, where there is always something different to discover. And of course we are well situated for visits to the attractions of Riebeek Kasteel and Tulbagh, as well as the up and coming wineries of the Swartland or, farther afield, Paarl, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch.

Day trips:

Guests are welcome (pre-booking essential) to come and enjoy the morning with us visiting the Buffalo Breeding Project and the Quagga Breeding Programme, and tracking the rare geometric tortoise in our wonderful 10 000 acre private nature reserve, escorted by our qualified guides in an open game-viewing vehicle. Guests can see antelope species unique to the Cape, such as bontebok and Cape mountain zebra, as well as many others such as eland, springbuck and black wildebeest, and numerous indigenous plants, birds and animals. In addition to nature drives, the kitchen of Bartholomeus Klip is renowned for serving world class cuisine and is open to serve a variety of meals when visiting the farm.
