Paarl Mountain

Paarl Mountain Day Hike

When you look from Zomerlust Guest House across Paarl Main Road you see the three huge granite outcrops that serve as the Western border of the town. (This is a National Monument and Heritage site)

We travel via the Jan Phillips Mountain Drive that winds along the mountain’s eastern slopes and offers unimpeded views of the town and the Groot Drakenstein Mountain Range to the start of our hike.
Jan Phillips was a well-known wagon builder from a wealthy family and with his financial support the municipality built the road in 1920.

Our hike starts at the Meulwater Wild Flower Reserve where the Meulwater Mountain Stream runs through the garden. Here visitors can get an idea of the impressive variety of plants on Paarl Mountain. The creation of the garden was largely due to a small group of enthusiastic ladies of the Beautifying Society, who established the garden in 1931 with the aim to conserve indigenous wild flowers. In 1956 the garden was proclaimed a Wildflower Reserve and is now managed by the Staff of the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve.

The garden has an impressive diversity of about 68 indigenous plants in a condensed area of 9 hectare.
The Boardwalk at the entrance was completed in 2011. A total of 4071kg recycled plastic was used to produce the boards.
After a visit to the Wild Flower Garden walk across the Meulwater picnic area to ascend Paarl Rock.
