Bartholomeus Klip (BK) is a wonderfully restored Victorian homestead on an operational wheat and sheep farm amid the 10,000 acres Elandsberg Nature Reserve in the Cape Winelands, just outside Riebeek and a mere 15 minutes’ drive from Wellington.
In just under 20 years of operation, the guesthouse has built a solid reputation for its impeccable farm-style hospitality, idyllic location in a peaceful country atmosphere and deliciously fresh food. Ten thousand acres of nature reserve with over 500 head of game, a working farm, wheatlands, flocks of sheep and a buffalo and tortoise breeding project invite no more than ten guests at a time to enjoy walking, hiking, mountain biking, canoeing and birdwatching, or just to switch off and relax. Bartholomeus klip is located in the scenic Riebeek Valley near Cape Town, and is an excellent base for exploring the Cape Winelands.

Planning an intimate celebration? You can rent the entire guesthouse, including its 5 fully serviced rooms, lounge, verandah, garden and swimming pool. You will have exclusive use of the farmhouse (5 rooms- maximum 10 guests).
There are four double rooms with bathrooms in the beautifully furnished farmhouse and one separate suite outside, with its own secluded verandah looking over the veld and up to the mountains. Finishes everywhere are luxurious and stylish, with crisp cotton bedding and elegant fabrics. Our own toiletries add a special touch to the Victorian-style bathrooms.
The Orchid Suite has a king-sized bed and its own verandah. This en-suite bathroom is fitted with a Victorian-style bath and basin and has a large walk-in shower and separate toilet. It is supplied with specially-made toiletries unique to Bartholomeus Klip, scented from our surrounding fynbos.
The Disa room, with its king-sized bed, has French doors opening onto the verandah. This en-suite bathroom has a shower fitted in the Victorian-style bath. It is supplied with specially-made toiletries unique to Bartholomeus Klip, scented from our surrounding fynbos.
Nerina (double or twin beds) is on the cool side of the house. This en-suite bathroom has a Victorian-style bath with an overhead shower. It is supplied with specially-made toiletries unique to Bartholomeus Klip, scented from our surrounding fynbos.
Arum (double or twin beds), is one of our prettiest rooms. This en-suite bathroom has a Victorian-style bath with an overhead shower. It is supplied with specially-made toiletries unique to Bartholomeus klip, scented from our surrounding fynbos.

The restaurant at our exclusive country lodge on a large farm and nature reserve just over an hour’s drive from Cape Town. Bartholomeus Klip is famous for its food, which is generous, imaginative and mostly made from a variety of local produce. High tea, with its delicious array of sweet and savoury choices, is a speciality of the farmhouse. The restaurant is open for lunch, with a weekly changing 4-course set menu with welcome drink and tea or coffee. By booking only and no children under 16 years.
Located about one hour’s drive from Cape Town, at a working sheep and wheat farm, in the middle of a 10,000 acre nature reserve, Bartholomeus Klip offers the perfect venue for conferencing, corporate celebrations, team building or brain storming sessions.
Our deckhouse right on the water’s edge offers a private space perfect for up to 30 people. Conferences are individually designed, with an air-conditioned conference room, an upstairs break-away room and an outside area overlooking the dam, the Elandsberg Nature Reserve and the Elandskloof Mountains.
We have overnight accommodation for executive groups of eight people, or sixteen sharing, and our resident restaurant team offers delicious food.
Activities at and around Bartholomeus Klip
There are many different things to do at Bartholomeus Klip, although plenty of our guests love to spend their time with us just switching off. However, if you want to do something more strenuous, we provide mountain bikes for cycling through the reserve or along the farm roads through the wheatfields, and there are plenty of wonderful routes to choose for walks.
Down at the dam guests can take to the water in canoes and kayaks, or go windsurfing, freshwater fishing or bird watching.
Even the most relaxed guest will want to join our rangers on the morning and evening nature drives through the reserve, where there is always something different to discover. And of course we are well situated for visits to the attractions of Riebeek Kasteel and Tulbagh, as well as the up and coming wineries of the Swartland or, farther afield, Paarl, Franschhoek and Stellenbosch.
Guests are welcome (pre-booking essential) to come and enjoy the morning with us visiting the Buffalo Breeding Project and the Quagga Breeding Programme, and tracking the rare geometric tortoise in our wonderful 10 000 acre private nature reserve, escorted by our qualified guides in an open game-viewing vehicle. Guests can see antelope species unique to the Cape, such as bontebok and Cape mountain zebra, as well as many others such as eland, springbuck and black wildebeest, and numerous indigenous plants, birds and animals. In addition to nature drives, the kitchen of Bartholomeus Klip is renowned for serving world class cuisine and is open to serve a variety of meals when visiting the farm.
