Die Mas is a tranquil destination on the Orange River bank in the town Kakamas, a mere 80km from Upington in the Northern Cape Province. The region boasts unique climatic conditions, where the waters of the powerful Orange River and the clear African skies bring life to the rich soil of the semi-desert region. This is where we grow our main crops of grapes.
The farm was established by the Hanekom Family in 1970 and has since grown to much bigger business. Visitors can expect a unique combination of export table grapes, raisins and award-winning wines and brandies at our wine cellar for a memorable experience of our hospitality and products.
Die Mas plays host to quaint self-catering chalets and a scenic campsite along the banks of the Orange River. It is also furnished with a large cozy Lapa available to hire for special occasions and weddings.
Die Mas van Kakamas Vineyards
Die Mas mandates a high regard and respect for conservation and sustainability across our numerous agricultural and horticultural undertakings. We are proud to protect and conserve the livestock as well as our bees on the farm. We also make sure to protect the numerous plant and bird species, that are unique to the Northern Cape.
Our tortoise sanctuary speaks for itself. We keep and care abandoned and mistreated tortoises and educate children who come to visit us. We eventually set the healthy ones free after good rains, back into natural areas that provide appropriate vegetation and protection from the harsh elements. Please feel free to come and visit.
The eradication of alien trees are being conducted in a responsible manner as not to cause soil erosion and to ensure the total suppression of any possible regrowth.
Given that bees use these trees as forage plants to provide nectar and pollen, we have placed bee hives on our grounds to offer the bees an alternative resource. See our online shop if you would like to buy some of our own pure, raw honey produced by these bees.
The concern for the environment is followed through in our cellar, also in respect of the management of waste water and other pollutants. Glass and plastic bottles which are used in our cellar are also recycled.
Our new generation fertilizers and spray programs are closely monitored, and spraying practices are done with regard to pests and diseases, weeds and plant growth. Our programs ensure that residues of agri-chemicals are both environmentally, bee and consumer friendly and only used as necessary. We also protect and preserve our riverbanks and bird life as much as we can.
Our policy basically comes down to: Reduce, reuse, recycle, preserve and protect through prudent management.
Open 6 days a week, our wine cellar offers wine and brandy tastings without having to make an appointment. Customers can purchase our award winning wines, brandy, gin and dessert wines at cellar prices. We also have a selection of home cooked jams, chutneys, raisins and green figs on sale in the cellar. Groups of over 10 guests are required to book, in order to ensure the best possible experience.
