Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS passes close to Earth

Get ready for an astronomical event in the fall of 2024! Tsuchinshan-ATLAS (A3), a comet discovered in January 2023 by the Purple Mountain Observatory in China and later spotted by the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) in February 2023, is gearing up for a close encounter with both Earth and the sun.

According to Sky Live, this comet will swing closest to the sun on September 28, 2024, followed by its nearest approach to Earth on October 12, when it will be approximately 44 million miles away from our planet.

Anticipation is building among astronomers, with some speculating that A3 might even outshine the remarkable Comet NEOWISE witnessed in 2020. Comparisons have been drawn to Comet Hyakutake's impressive visibility in 1996. However, caution is advised as predicting a comet's brightness is famously tricky.

Quanzhi Ye, a planetary astronomer at the University of Maryland, humorously remarks, “Comets are like cats: They have tails; they do what they want... We won’t know until we get there.” Stay tuned for updates as we approach this celestial rendezvous!
